A Friday Buffet
No. 017 Positive vibes, optimism, and the surprising place I feel most confident.
Hello!
The fact that today’s brilliant blue sky and abundant sunshine is the first we’ve had on a Friday in about five or six weeks is not lost on me. What a gift! And it is so incredibly necessary. From the snowy start to the week to the roller coaster of temperatures, today’s winter-perfect weather feels like a dream. I don’t entirely believe in signs and/or good omens (ok, maybe just a little), but this gorgeous morning is quite encouraging of that mindset. :)
In other news that’s not directly related to the weather (are you new here?), I have suddenly felt a shift toward the ultra-positive for this year. Listen, I never had doubts about 2023. In fact, I was exceptionally excited for this year to begin despite early January throwing us a few curve balls. But now that we’re closing in on the last few days of the month and we have been given this gift of sunshine today (and the next few, apparently), I’m taking it as a sign for a lot of goodness ahead.
Speaking of a sunny disposition (jokes are free today), more than a few people have recently told me how much they appreciate, and are quite aware of, my positive attitude and general optimism. First, thank you so much! Wow. I appreciate that generous observation and kindness in regard to how I present myself to the world. Second, it has not always been easy (or simple) to have my baseline be extremely optimistic and positive.
I am not the first, or last, person to say life isn’t easy. Or fair. Or carefree. It is quite the opposite for most people and as years go by and various major life events happen to us all, (running the gamut from “best day ever” to “OMG I can’t believe what is happening”) the way we handle situations is what will define how we move through our lives. Do I sound like a motivational speaker? Apologies.
I’m just trying this say this: I have experienced a lot of ridiculously difficult/sad/bad junk, but I refuse to solely focus on those time periods and experiences for the sake of my sanity and preference for positivity. Maybe that should be the title of my book? Because I will always choose being happy. It’s not always the easiest option. My mood can flip like a switch and as someone who prefers to be in control of almost everything…some situations can be tricky!
All of this is a long-winded way of saying, again, thank you for noticing and appreciating my positive outlook and general optimism. Due to those difficult times I referenced earlier, I tend to have a “this could be much worse” attitude when presented with various tough moments. They’re not that tough. Much worse has happened. And I’ve gotten through it all.
I am pretty proud of myself, actually, because I would never want to be defined by the most difficult elements of my life. They have made me who I am, but I am much happier to be known as someone who looks on the bright side and who brings joy to others. I share my thoughts on the weather and other fairly mundane topics here (and on social media) because I always hope to be able to help others who may be going through something as well. A very difficult experience may be surrounding you, but it’s still important to find the good parts - there will always be one - even if it’s as small as noticing a gorgeous blue sky.
Beyond my perpetual optimism, I currently find myself seeking experiences - or environments - where I feel my most confident. You may notice I reference NYC often. I absolutely love it there. Some of my fondest memories growing up were my family’s vacation to the city each December. Some of my biggest “growth” moments took place during my time at NYU and when I moved to the city after college. When I visit New York, I tend to feel like the best, most confident version of myself. It’s a pretty incredible feeling and gives me an invigorating boost of energy.
Now, we’re living near Boston, close to our families, in a house with a yard, and I am not putting that down whatsoever (life is good). A major achievement for me last year was finally getting my driver’s license. Not an easy feat for someone well-past 16 years old. However, now that I have my license and my own car, driving places on my own has become my new Most Confident Self environment. Just yesterday when I was doing a quick errand, I paused (not literally) while driving to my destination and felt so proud of how far I had come.
Driving used to scare me. A lot. But the saying rings true: the more you do something the more comfortable you become. I would not say I’m fearless in the driving world, but I am much more OK with it than I used to be. The feelings I have when I’m in NYC - strong, capable, confident, independent - are finally washing over me here as well. My Most Confident Self environment is not just one specific location anymore; it’s (finally) wherever I choose to be.
I hope this long-winded collection of words leaves you feeling positive. And if you need a spike of sunshine or a look on the bright side, I am here. I’m always happy to help.
For inquiring [foodie] minds…

I highly recommend (again) a visit to A Tavola in Winchester! Wonderful Italian food, the most-welcoming staff, and an atmosphere that encourages one to relax, unwind, and enjoy.
I have been raving about Surf Seafood in Woburn lately because the food is just so good! A large menu with an abundance of gluten free options; my favorites come from the sushi section (see above) and I’m looking forward to trying several of their other dishes soon.
One-Pan Coconut Curry Rice with Chicken and Vegetables - one of my favorite weeknight meals! Recipe is via NYT Cooking (a subscription is a great idea or gift) and I strongly recommend adding this to your weeknight dinner rotation. Scrumptious dish with little effort and a lot of yum. Naturally gluten free, dairy free, and overall awesome.
A buffet for today: 1/27/2023
I appreciate the show ‘Frasier’ much more now than when it originally aired. Kind of excited for the reboot!
Speaking of denim, my go-to pairs are from Madewell. Where do you find your favorite jeans?
A concise collection of the best espresso martinis in Boston. I often prefer one of these instead of dessert!
I am very intrigued by this home that has cashmere-lined walls in the billiards room. Snazzy.
50(!) restaurants that are preparing to open in Boston (in it and near it) in 2023. Yippee!
Strongly considering this Sausage and Leek Pasta for dinner next week.
Crispy Cauliflower Tacos sound delicious to me!
I baked brookies a few years ago (it’s a glorious combo of brownie/chocolate chip cookie) and I think it’s time to make them again.
Already looking forward to Met Gala 2023 in May; the theme is Karl Lagerfeld. That fashion will be superb.
Here to remind you again that Varley has all of the cozy and chic goodness to wear now and into the spring.
And in case you hadn’t heard…Oscar nominations are out!
Just for fun luxury: Bottega Veneta Medium Loop Intrecciato Bag - it’s even more chic in person. ;) The almond color is divine.
Cheers and joy,
Mollie
