Hello and welcome. Thank you for subscribing to A Friday Buffet and my tiny corner of the big, enormous internet. I write about gluten free food, great restaurants, my not-so-secret sneaker/denim/coat obsession, personal moments, and the weekly Buffet, which features a handful of articles I’ve enjoyed during my own “scrolling” of the web (free of affiliate links). I’m #nevernothungry so I’ll also recommend snacks quite often. ;)
Somehow here without subscribing? Here you go.
Hello!
And we’re back with issue #28 on this 28th day of April which I really couldn’t have planned better if I’d tried. I’m here for the signs, good vibes, and moments of Serendipity. Plus, the sun is shining(!) with a long weekend just moments away…
I’m not sure if you have noticed, perhaps you have, but the general consensus around what’s “in style” right now seems to be focused on 90s trends, which was actually over 30 years ago. WHAT?!
Yes, you read that right and I can barely believe it. 1990 was 33 years ago which feels insane yet entirely possible because I was only five years old in 1990 and now I am 37, closing in on 38 this August. TIME. It just keeps going. But enough about my shock in regard to reality - life is happening constantly - let’s dive in briefly with regard to that 90s style that’s…everywhere. Didn’t we do this already?
Last weekend I found myself joyfully wearing high-top Converse sneakers, wide-leg cargo jeans, a striped top, and an over-sized denim jacket in hand if it cooled off in the evening. I was extremely comfortable but also somewhat confused.
Excuse me? Did my high school self come back? I was a teen starting in 1998, which was prime time for many of those “fashionable” moments. And I was just as into clothes and style then as I am now; I’ve been reading the fashion magazines forever (The Met Gala is on Monday!). I have been a fan of styling myself since I was 2. I know the movie ‘Clueless’ by heart. I still want to go to Fred Segal. ;)
Here’s a fun fact: I was a “model” (ha! I am ridiculously short) at Limited Too in the mall for one day in the late 1990s. The store manager liked the carpenter boots that I wore constantly with my Limited Too wardrobe (I wore nothing else) so they asked if I wanted to be a “model” for a day standing outside the store encouraging other girls my age to come in and shop. This was a dream for very short, 12-year-old me.
This brief opportunity made my year and gave me (read: my parents) a discount on whatever I purchased in the store once my job was complete. Amazing! Friends, I have loved clothes forever and with the resurgence of 90s fashion, I feel like I’m living in the past, but with a grown-up twist. Does that make sense?
The twist is that I’m loving the 2023 versions of those 90s classics primarily because I know myself and personal style far better now than when I was 14. I have a much better handle on how to create an outfit, how to mix and match proportions correctly for my height, and how to feel confident in whatever look I choose for the day (read: wear what makes you feel your best).
#OOTD is still a thing if you ask me and I cannot imagine my own teen years with social media. I’m thrilled I grew up without it. But that’s another discussion for another day.
While the concept of “baggy everything” seems to be very on-trend, I still think that tends to work best for the taller folks. I’ve been embracing baggier pants, but I like them with a fitted tee or a looser top that gets tucked in to make sure the proportion works. For layering, I’ve been choosing an over-size denim jacket or a cropped one to balance out the non-fitted pant.
Many a fashion influencer have noted that a baggy shirt should go with fitted pants and wide-leg denim is best with a more-tailored shirt. Yes, this makes sense and works well; however, this is another case of “you do you.” If that combo works for you, then great! If you rather mix it up and change the proportion entirely, go right ahead. There are fashion suggestions, in my opinion, but rarely fashion ‘rules.’ ;)
Here are the pieces in my closet that I’m reaching for most often while the 90s are back in style.
I love the AGOLDE Cass Baggy Cargo Jean for my “90s inspired” denim.
The Alex Mill Trucker Jacket in Recycled Denim has a great, cropped fit that looks chic when paired with loose-fit pants (straight leg or wide-leg).
My favorite high-top Converse Chuck 70 Vintage Canvas go with everything. And they can be customized!
Can’t go wrong with an AYR The Deep End oxford shirt - goes with all of the denim styles for a very classic, timeless look.
On a more-modern fashion note, I’ve gone into the deep end browsing for infant-sized clothing for my niece! Now that’s a rabbit hole. Everything is so tiny and cute! She looks adorable in floral prints, matching sets, stripes, neutrals, pastels, all of it. Can you tell I’m obsessed? I love buying her clothes and conveniently kids’ clothing prices are far more reasonable. ;)
I have a cart open at Nordstrom with outfits from Magnetic Me, Pehr, Mini Boden, and Rylee + Cru. My niece may not be quite old enough for a shopping trip yet, but that won’t stop me from making sure she’s extra-stylish every day. :)
For the [Gluten Free] Food Fanatics. #celiaclife

Pizza transcends all trends and time as it will always be popular. We recently visited Fiorella’s Cucina in Lexington and loved our experience! Gluten free pizza and pasta are both available; the menu is large for non-GF options. I strongly recommend visiting for GF pizza at the bar with a glass of wine - a great weekend activity!
For a more upscale scene, I’d highly recommend The Street Bar at The Newbury in Boston. Another favorite of ours, Contessa, is on the top floor, but if you’re looking for something more casual, yet fancy, stay on the main level and go to The Street Bar. There are ample GF options including an awesome turkey club with fries(!) which I devoured after a walk around the city. That pickle was pretty fantastic, too.
The final food for today is a nostalgic breakfast: homemade fried rice! Yes, I love fried rice for breakfast and have been eating it in the morning since I was very young. It’s so good!
My most-recent version included leftover GF fried rice from Kin Dee, our current favorite Thai takeout spot, to which I added two scrambled eggs. Delicious, satisfying, and filling. I know this type of breakfast isn’t for everyone, but I love it because it’s a reminder of the past. And a nod to the present - my favorite food hasn’t changed! :)
1990s fashion, and food, is very much ‘in’ right now. I’m loving the way all of it makes me feel and how thinking of that decade brings me back to such a different time of life. While I am quite proud of all I’ve accomplished since, it’s fun to think back to that decade when life was a bit calmer, easier, and I was, briefly, a model.
A Buffet for Today: 4/28/2023
I’m loving the Freda Salvador Fina Slip on Espadrille. They elevate any outfit, which is perfect for going out at night or any daytime event.
The wardrobe staple we all need is pretty classic (of course).
Honey Mustard Pretzel Chicken and Avocado Bacon Salad. Yum.
Spring means it’s time for Asparagus and Parmesan Risotto.
Yes, we all need to tip the server in addition to that kitchen fee.
Spending time face-to-face with friends is healthy. No plans required!
The Met Gala is on Monday and I’ll be watching that red carpet closely.
I’ve quickly become The [Cool] Shopping Aunt for my niece. I recently discovered the brand Pehr, which makes the cutest pieces for little ones.
Thoroughly enjoying our new espresso machine, I’m tempted to make Chocolate Espresso Sugar Cookies. Time to add espresso to everything!
Here’s a hot take on bananas: I despise them. But not everyone else does.
Last but not least: raffia tote season is back and of course Prada has won.
Cheers and joy,
Mollie
